Chapter 7

The day Samuel and I finally got to bring our girls home, we were a bundle of nerves and bursting with excitement. They had spent four weeks in the hospital, and I wanted to show them around. At the same time, I had an intense craving to weep in joy for the blessings.

Samuel was carrying Sadie, while I clutched onto Mila. I smiled, secretly watching Samuel croon into Sadie’s ear as we headed to our bedroom. Samuel walked past the door, and that’s when I realized we were headed to the nursery.

My eyes shone in anticipation. I had completely forgotten about that surprise. “Does this mean I finally get to see the secret garden?”

He chuckled and winked at me before pushing open the door.

I bit my lip to fight the beaming smile that spread on my face. My eyes widened as they darted around the gorgeous pink nursery. “How in hell did you manage to do all this?” I squealed, laughing as I stood in the center of the perfect room and turned around to drink it all in.

“Do you like it?”

I looked at him, realizing that it had been several days since we had looked into each other’s eyes with a reason other than to discuss who changed which baby’s nappy. “Samuel…” I leaned closer and hugged him sideways, both of us chuckling as our babies got in the way. “It’s the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. When did you develop such pristine feminine taste?” I joked. The nursery was a girly wonderland with ruffled and bows.

“Aah,” he grinned. “I figured since I’d be the only man in the midst of three gorgeous girls, it was about time I threw in the towel and became one of you.”

I chuckled and walked toward the personalized wooden cribs. I lowered Mila into the one with her name stamped onto the bars and glanced around. I couldn't stop looking. “I’m glad you kept this a surprise. The impact wouldn’t have been nearly as potent if I’d been a part of the process.”

“I know, right.” Sadie made a short whimpering sound as he placed her in her crib and waited for her to close her eyes again. Reaching for me, he clutched me around the shoulders and tugged me to his side forcefully. His eyes were focused on our girls.

I reveled in the knowledge that he was so wonderful with kids. He was always willing to help, to take over, and that had kept me from becoming an agitated wreck during the past four weeks. After several seconds, I tilted my head backward to look at him, when I noticed his somber expression. “What is it?” I slid my hands up his chest.

He met my eye and swallowed. “You changed my life.”

Goosebumps popped across my skin. I exhaled sharply to combat the emotion trapped in my chest. “You changed mine.”

He smiled shortly, his hand sliding across my cheek before I tilted my chin up for a kiss. Mila gurgled something, and we broke the kiss abruptly, turning toward her hastily.
